From January 1st, electric scooters can circulate on the roads of all cities in Italy. With the publication in the Official Gazette of Law no. 160, electric scooters are equated to bicycles, therefore they are recognized in all respects as “vehicles” by the highway code and will be able to circulate in the city.
Street electric scooters must not exceed 20 km / h and must not have a power exceeding 500 watts. While they must be equipped with front and rear lights.
As with bicycles, a driving license is not required in the case of a scooter. No insurance or helmet obligation. In the evening and at night, however, you must wear a reflective jacket. Under no circumstances will it be possible to bring a passenger.
The equation of these vehicles with bicycles was desired by many municipalities to decongest traffic and to put an order in a jungle of rules. But it is precisely on the safety rules that many doubts remain.
