A ‘second skin’ flexible, reflective and full color

A team of scientists from the University Central Florida (USA) has developed an innovative technique to create an ultra-thin, flexible and full-color reflective screen. It is the first device of its kind worldwide and has been collected this week by Nature Communications.

This new technique has allowed designing a lightweight, flexible screen that does not require light source for its operation: it seems a second skin that simulates the mechanism of camouflage animals such as chameleons or octopuses.

“Any man-made display, whether LCD, LED, CRT … is rigid, fragile and bulky. But if you look at an octopus, you see that you can create colors on your skin, a screen that covers your entire body, with very complex contours, and is also stretchable and flexible. And that is our goal: Can we take inspiration from biology and create a screen that looks like skin? “Explains study leader Dibasic.

Inspired by nature, scientists designed this reflective material with a thin layer of liquid crystal placed on a metal nanostructure capable of absorbing some wavelengths and reflecting others. In this way, the colors that are reflected, that is, those that perceive the ones we look at, can be controlled at will by regulating a small electric current that interacts with the molecules of the liquid crystal layer and the Plasmon waves of the Surface of the metal nanostructure.

Unlike other earlier devices that could display a rather limited range of colors, this screen can “play” with any type of color with a size 15 times thinner than a human hair.

Future applications for this reflective skin are as varied as accessible. We could have clothes that would change color at will (and any type of textile or plastic alike) or screens for mobile or computers completely flexible, thin and light.

“Your camouflage, your clothes, your fashion accessories – All could change. Why do I need 50 shirts in my closet if I can change the color and the drawings of one at will? “, Explains Chandra.

The runners ask motorists to take their cars to the point

The technical state of the vehicles worries the popular Spanish runners. And is that poor conservation a risk factor for runners even with safety vest, who live and share with the use of the road network.

This is one of the main conclusions of the Race of the 2016 Workshop. Led by the Association of Workshops of Madrid, whose motto is “For road safety from the responsible maintenance of the vehicle”, includes the updated guide «Run Between cars: tips for the pedestrian runner and responsible motorist »prepared by ASETRA, Stop Accidents and the Macomb Foundation. Each year, more than 11,000 pedestrian crossings and 5,800 traffic accidents involving cyclists are involved in Spain.

Train between well-maintained cars

Running is a healthy habit however not risk free if done close to cars. What do the popular riders think of their habits when training together and sharing motorists with the road network? How do they assess the state of the vehicles with which they intersect at intersections such as pedestrian crossings, exits from garages or traffic lights?

The above mentioned guide lists the most dangerous factors for these athletes when they run alongside the road traffic, either in cities or outside. “Running between cars” examines, among others, the importance of wearing reflective clothing, the convenience of not running headphones and music when approaching intersections with vehicles or the effect on the perception of the risk that fatigue causes on the runners. But, undoubtedly, the most relevant data arise from the survey conducted by the corridors themselves.

– 60% are aware of being a very special type of pedestrian when training in forced coexistence with road traffic

– Many do not aide the minimum precautions to guarantee their safety in intersections like pedestrian crossings, with or without semaphore, and exits of garages. Even those who in two-way ways do not value the importance of moving on the left shoulder

– Most runners in reflective vest still think it’s better to run down the road than on the sidewalk. This is because they suffer fewer joints, although the risk of abuse increases exponentially

– More than 90% are clear that, in case of crossing a vehicle, it must go at the appropriate speed to the track and be in perfect maintenance conditions, especially with regard to brakes, tires and shock absorbers.

Guide patrons to make safety and fashion

Supporting the creators of a system for producing tailor-made jeans with reflective strips, the editors of a new fashion magazine, or the designers of an androgynous clothing collection are three examples of the projects you can wager on Kick starter, a platform for Make patrons and go shopping that is experiencing a great boom.

Fashion and innovation are two concepts that often walk together. That is why it is not surprising that a web that rewards originality is frequented by fans and professionals to hunt trends. In addition, betting on crowd funding also means saying yes to a financing system that turns its back on banks. Something that has a lot of pull if we consider the popularity they have enjoyed since Lehman Brothers and company panicked the world.

In essence Kick starter’s operation is extremely simple: you propose an idea that you want to finance (there are exceptions), the amount of money needed to put it into practice, explain what your patrons will get in return based on your donations and make a presentation of Your project as clear and beautiful as possible. You should keep in mind that Kick starter is in the United States, although there are ways to present a project from Spain.

Whether seeking to make a donation selflessly or to purchase a reflective product that has fascinated the procedure is simple. You only need to use your Facebook account to sign up for Kick starter and also have one on Amazon to make payments. That’s enough to start looking for projects that interest you.

You can bet on those who have already obtained the funding they are looking for and are raising funds or not. In the latter case if the project at the end of 90 days has failed to raise enough money, you have the money that you have contributed. You should also keep in mind if you want to get a product that the project managers send out of the United States. Something that happens in many cases adding a supplement to the amount requested.

Keep in mind, however, that Kick starter does not offer guarantees on the projects it hosts. Some have ended in fiasco after achieving the amount that was marked as goal. But you do not have to be too scared. It is not often that happens. In any case if you have doubts you can always ask the promoter directly anything before making any donation. It may also be well to goggling a bit to gather information on those submitting the projects if you are going to make a large donation.

Here are three examples of fashion proposals that have not yet achieved the quantity that have been marked and that allow shipments to Spain. Reflective clothing is good for riding or skating. If you are horrified by the typical reflective vests you can try to get one of the T-shirts from the Fix project. They are ideal to make yourself visible while riding on bikes or skates. As its design is attractive you can also wear them for the day. You have less than 10 days to support the proposal and for 55 dollars to get a shirt (with shipping costs to Spain included).

Some of the projects are very reminiscent of the teleshopping ads. That is at least what we have suggested stockings with socks built to wear Boo tights high boots. You can get a pair of them for $ 25 plus the 5 that costs shipping to Spain. Although, yes, at the moment does not go very well. They have only risen just over $ 3,000 and have to reach 25,000 by August 23rd.

Stacy will provide reflective vests and safety boots to the toilets

The Primary Care Management of León has a period of 60 days to deliver continuous personal care equipment to individual health personnel, such as reflective waistcoats or safety boots, so that they can attend traffic accidents. After the complaint filed last April by the nursing union Sates, the Labor Inspection and Social Security of León obliges Stacy to provide the toilets of these equipment that they use when they should attend someone outside the health centers. “It is incomprehensible that Stacy endangers its professionals, when these endowments of material must be foreseen in each fiscal year,” the union said.

In its resolution, the Inspectorate of Labor notes that it contacted the Primary Care Manager of León, Concepción Dominguez, who stated that, since there was no budget item to purchase this reflective material, he transferred to the central services to carry out the management from the Ministry of Health.

According to the union explained in a press release, sources from the Ministry said that the centralized order had already been carried out, so the resolution urges the Primary Care Manager to deliver the staff within 60 days Which carries out continuous care in the health centers of Leon of the individual protection equipment necessary for the development of its functions.

In this regard, Sat recalled that, since the adoption of the Law on Measures in 2012, Stacy “does not give nurses the necessary clothing to make their outings for home care or to go to the emergency room as a traffic accident.” In this line, the union denounces that, since the recent transport competition of 2016, “nurses, who have joined the health centers, lacking these reflective clothes, must do their work with their own.”

Pedestrians have their share of responsibility in road safety

Although it is the drivers who have to take precautions and be aware that they carry a dangerous machine, pedestrians also have their share of responsibility in road safety. And they do not always do. The number of pedestrians who cross inappropriate places or do when traffic lights are red is alarming, and yet the sanctions imposed by the Conceals on pedestrians are anecdotal. In fact, the fines are so exceptional that often the passers-by themselves do not know that their behavior can be penalized. However, it is. The Traffic Law, which was last updated only a few months ago, includes not only the rules of circulation that must be respected by drivers, but also those that must be followed by people walking, as well as the penalties for punishing those who Do not meet

Crossing the street outside the pedestrian crossings or walking along the roadway when there is a pedestrian area suitable for doing so can be penalized with a fine of 80 Euros. That same amount can impose the security forces to those who do not walk by the left outside the urban area or to those who circulate by highway or highway. Meanwhile, skipping a red light can cost 200 Euros. Under the new law, pedestrians are required to undergo alcohol or drug checks if they are involved in an accident or if they have committed an offense. In this case, if the result of these tests is positive, the fine can reach 1,000 Euros, and there will also be a penalty if the pedestrian refuses to submit to the controls. According to data from the General Directorate of Traffic, one in five pedestrians without any reflective vest struck during the year 2014 had consumed alcohol.

Also according to DGT data, between 40 and 50% of the abuses that occur in Galicia are due to infractions of the pedestrians themselves, who often forget that they are the weakest element in the road. Despite this, opinions on the timing of fines are found. In front of those who bet on the pedagogical value of the sanctions are those who believe that, especially if we speak of urban environments, the priority of pedestrians is above all else. This supposes that there was no sanction here, nor is there any provision for it, “explains a spokesman for this Council, adding that it is also not foreseen to make” campaigns to dire the peons, given that the city of Monteverdi is two citizens, and not two vehicles’.

Daniel Micelle, chief of the Local Police of this conceal, thinks that “peons obviously dye to respect the rule and make or dye to do”, but in his opinion “if the drivers pay due attention and moderate speed, this would change shrub. Caquetá of those that we take a car in the man’s we know that we can cater to nail persona, so Mellor raise or foot of the accelerator and pone to as much attention possible.

As in Monteverdi, Orense, a city in which the alarm has been alarmed by the high number of abuses, imposed fines last year on pedestrians for improper crossing. In order to deal with accidents, the Connell and Administrations with competencies in traffic agreed last week to reinforce the presence of Local Police officers in the street and to develop awareness campaigns on road safety.

In A Corunna, a total of 70 pedestrian fines were processed throughout 2015, although only three of them were due to infractions such as not crossing the pedestrian without wearing safety vest and crossing or crossing the red traffic light. The other sanctions concerned the carrying out of invasive activities that endangered people and circulation. In Ferrol complaints are dealt with in serious cases, such as the recent one of a person who did not pass through the pedestrian crossing and that when the agents caught his attention he not only crossed equally, but they lacked respect. In recent years in this city has imposed a fine per year to pedestrians.

Cycling safety clothes for preventing traffic accidents

The Spanish clothing brand specializing in premium cycling equipment El Maze, with roots in Toledo in Santa Cruz de la Zara, has launched a new collection of safety clothing under the theme Respect focused on preventing traffic accidents and awareness of cyclists and drivers of Need for mutual respect. The fact is that this project is being carried out at a time when there is a considerable increase in the number of road riders.

According to their promoters, the range, consisting of jersey, culottes, cap, gloves, socks and waistcoat aims, without renouncing the design, to remind all the road users the “priceless value of respect”, at a time when Traffic accidents “are multiplying their notoriety worldwide” with celebrities as famous as GP motorcycle champion Nicky Hayden or the winner of a Gyro Michele Scarping.

50% of the profits from the sales of this equipment will go to the Stop Accidents Association, a non-profit organization founded by relatives and friends of victims of traffic accidents. The NGO will allocate these funds to the organization of bike and road education workshops in various schools in the Spanish geography.

“The road education is not only essential, but our best tool to avoid traffic accidents in the future. In our workshops, we encourage the use of bicycles as a means of transport and in the future we can make responsible use of them on the streets of the city, “says Ana Novella, president of Stop Accidents.

An icon that symbolizes respect

The #Respect range combines fluorine and reflective elements with an increasingly shared identity between cyclists and drivers: a large arrow that refers to the meter and a half of distance that should leave the cars when overtaking the bikes. “It is not so much a reflective element as an icon that symbolizes respect, doing things right. More than a demand is a feeling of pride, to know that you are on the side of the good, those who follow the rules and enjoy their passion, “said Gonzalo, spokesman for El Maze.

“That’s why,” he adds, “we are proud to collaborate with Stop Accidents, an NGO that has been struggling to reduce all kinds of accidents. It has done a very good job, but all help is small and we want to play our part to fight against this great scourge of society: the traffic accidents. “The sets are designed for the practice of road cycling and MTB with high temperatures, with last generation reflective fabric, tight sleeves, breathable sides and non-slip rubber on the bottom.

El Maze store comes from the blog El Tie del Maze that several cycling lovers created years ago to tell their adventures, talk about this sport and share their passion. That’s why they took the technical clothing line, tested and high quality.

A man without reflective clothing is killed by a car

According to the first data, the deadly crash happened on Thursday night on the N-121-A road linking Pamplona and France to Begonia could have occurred when the deceased man crossed the road at night, without reflective clothing.

O.G.F, a 43-year-old man from Cantabria, who was driving a truck on the N-121-A, in municipality, between this town and Sunbelt, was killed by a vehicle. The event took place near midnight, about 23.55 on Thursday. The driver of the car that was driving this man is a 19-year-old neighbor of municipality.

Crossing the road

Early indications indicate that the man, who was driving a truck, parked the vehicle on the right side of the road. Apparently, he wanted to cross the national road where the events took place on the other side of the road, where there is a gas station.

The driver of the car may not have seen the truck driver crossing the road, which caused the vehicle to hit him.

Everything seems to indicate that the deceased was not wearing reflective vest. The young man who was driving, a neighbor, was negative in all the tests that have been practiced, both alcohol and drug. Despite the impact, he was unscathed after the fatal accident.

Up to the scene of the events were patrols of the Provincial Police and Pamplona Road Safety as well as the team of attestations investigating the causes of the attack? That point of the N-121-A road between Donate and Sunbelt is complicated because truckers frequently park their vehicle on one side of the road and are often seen to cross on foot. The three lanes of the causeway and walk a stretch along the shoulder, until passing to the gas station and restaurant located on the other side. This is not the first time that a fatal attack has occurred near that point.
