Santa Claus not only brings presents but also important tips

On St. Nicholas Day, elementary school children were informed about the correct behavior in the dark: the importance of wearing reflective clothing at night. In tow, Santa Claus had not servant Utrecht, but two policemen and experts from the ADAC.

Santa knows everything. He knows who can write beautifully, paint well or calculate quickly. He knows who a good footballer or a vocalist singer, who is visiting Primary School on December 6, knows a lot more. Namely, how important it is to be clearly visible from the road. And he does not have farmhand Utrecht, but two policemen and experts from the ADAC.

“The safety vest is your flare,” explains the long-bearded and red-robed man to the girls and boys of the class 1b. He brings some to himself. Some wear yellow ADAC vests, others do not. A policeman turns off the light and everyone can see it: anyone who wears a vest is immediately recognizable, but others hardly recognize it – especially not if they wear dark jackets and trousers. First graders also learn how to cross a zebra crossing correctly and how little a driver sees in the dark. After that, of course, comes what everyone has been waiting for: Nicholas opens his bag, chocolate, rulers and reflective tapes come to light. This St. Nicholas day, the children agree, they will not forget so fast.

Shine in the dark

How important light clothes and reflective vests are in the dark season, learned the first graders of the Bamberger school by a traffic safety adviser to the police.

Under the motto “Safety through visibility”, traffic safety consultant Ralf Desman of the Coifed District Police Department in the Bamberger School carried out an action aimed specifically at the children of the first classes.

Since the girls and boys in the winter months in the morning on the way to school and in the afternoon are more often in the dark on the road, it is vital for them to be seen in good time by the selection of garments (reflective jackets, pedestrian reflectors, reflective applications). Within a school lesson, Ralf Desman made children aware of the importance of choosing the right clothing in the dark based on a story with a pictorial representation.

The children received at the end of the hour reflective tapes for the jackets. This application allows the driver to perceive the children in the spotlight at a distance of 130 meters. This could be made available to the children for the support of the Coifed roundabout and the Coifed road traffic department.

Reflective jackets keep you running safer

This jacket made me a glowing runner that nobody could see. Large reflective surfaces are complemented by special optical fibers that light up and flash as an imaginary running beacon. This is one of the warmest running jackets designed for the worst weather.

Special clothing sets with distinctive reflective elements for running in winter, when the light is barely a few hours outdoors, have virtually every brand of running clothing in its portfolio. Most of them come with quality functional materials and design of reflexive elements, whose imaginativeness and design will make you look up at night after lighting with a headlamp.

Since it is a soft-shell jacket, it is especially useful at lower temperatures. If I was running at a faster pace at five degrees above zero, I was warm in it despite generously designed ventilation. Reflective material from which the main part of the jacket also increases stiffness, so it is not possible to stretch the sleeves. But when the temperatures drop below the freezing point or a fresh wind blows, becoming a welcomed helper from the jacket and maybe even in the winter on cross-country skiing. It is also warm enough to be used when walking when you feel well at temperatures above zero. In addition, he can handle heavy rain, which he can resist for quite a while. Also worth mentioning is a small MP3 player pocket with an internal earphone hole, so the headphone cable can all be worn under the jacket.

Reflective elements do not form any small reflective tapes, reflective logos, or tiny dot as usual, but straight across the entire surface. And so at the moment when the headlight light came on, I looked a little like a knight in shining armor. If you run in places where cars or cyclists are moving, they will certainly not overlook you.

PUMA Illuminate is an interesting running jacket designed for the worst weather when it is snowing, raining, wind blowing and temperatures below zero. Just in such a climate, it works best, and unlike ordinary reflective clothing, a car driver or a cyclist who does not have lights on can see you in this jacket. Given this unconventional light security solution, it is a fairly high price.

Dog accessories for the dark season

Reflector Dog Harness, LED dog leash with reflective materials

It does not matter if it’s light or dark, cold or warm – the dog needs a spout. So master and mistress gather in wind, weather and at any time of the day, to march through the park or forest for a few hours. But especially in winter, it can be uncomfortable for two-and four-legged friends not only because of the cold but also because of the sparse light conditions it can be very dangerous.

Because especially in the insufficiently illuminated sections of the Grassy round – for example, at the edge of the forest or in the park – you can lose sight of the Duffy ever. That could also happen to a passing cyclist and already happens a misfortune…

It gets worse on the streets: Although there are lanterns and at least a little lighting, but on the one hand dogs are overlooked (due to their size) even insufficient light conditions of many motorists; Second, the street lighting is barely enough to see everything clearly – especially not if your dog has dark fur.

Therefore, it is not only very careful in the dark season – and if necessary, the four-legged again – one should also provide additional measures for more security on the grass laps.

Already with simple means, you can make sure to be better seen as the dog walk. For example, by wearing a lighter reflective vest during the walks. This will alert you as a dog owner faster. An additional reflector vest can also do no harm, and a flashlight should be part of the walk, especially when going through dark sections such as the forest or park.

In addition, there is now a huge own market for dog accessories for the dark season. Reflector harnesses, reflective tapes, flashing collars, LED lines or light trailers and other little helpers make walking in the dark a little safer.

New biker reflective jacket

The band which is to ensure the safety of cyclists on the roads was shown yesterday by the Technical University of Liberec. It also illuminates and signals a change of direction.

Development of the technology lasted two years and the garment is unique in the world. The cyclist can see it at night up to 500 meters and very well at 250 meters. Commonly used reflective materials will alert the driver to a cyclist 200 meters away. The clothes which sewn-on high light reflective tapes will be available from September.

Outwardly, this is a conventional reflective cycling jacket, which incorporates LED lighting and an electronic device. The LEDs light up with it.

The second electronic unit is on a bicycle and is used to alert the change of direction. “Both units are connected wirelessly,” said Antonym Havel, head of the clothing department. According to him, the maintenance of the reflective jacket is easy. It can be routinely washed like other functional garments. “Only the electronic unit must be removed from the jacket,” he said.

Reflective Belt Test

The lighted mobile or the white t-shirt will not save your life on the night road. You’d better buy reflective vests, ideal for the widest bands in bright colors. But there are huge differences among them – the ability to reflect light is the best for them, compared to the last sixty times.

Usually tragic, as statistics show. For example, over 130 pedestrians died on the roads last year, 60 percent of which were killed at night.

Therefore, according to the amendment to the Road Act, pedestrians are obliged to wear so-called retro-reflective elements as of February when they move on an unlit road outside the village in the dark, dark, in heavy rain, snow or in the tunnel.

Therefore, the MF DNES Test, together with BESIP, tested 26 reflective tapes. We bought it in various places – shops, post offices, gas stations and e-shops. Measurement of the retro reflection, i.e. the intensity with which the tapes reflect the light, was taken by the accredited laboratory of the Center for Transport Research.

Most of them are bright yellow

At first glance, tapes at each end of the qualitative scale look virtually the same – light green, plastic, self-winding. “In fact, it’s not the color of the tape, but the amount and density of a special glass mass that provides a reflection of light in the tape,” explains the principle of BESIP Martin Farrar. However, it is difficult for the layman to know.

The first advice on how to properly choose a reflective tape is, according to the painter. “Be careful about whether the tape meets the standard.”

In mind, the standard is EN 471 or 20471. Look for the tape or the enclosed instructions. However, as the test showed, the quality of the retro reflection does not necessarily have to be directly related to the quality of the information given. That’s why the Ferrier recommends considering color.

“We recommend the color most bright yellow, which is best visible and red or green,” says the BESIP chief.

Although the red color of reflective elements conforms to a technical standard, it is also better to choose the lightest shade – which is also confirmed by the test results. In the first half of the ranking, there was no red, not even orange tape, but the last eight of them had a color of just five.

“Ideal is white and silver, where no color is applied to dampen reflection. Because the color will partially absorb the light that falls on it, the darker the strip will be, the less it will shine, “explains the consequences of physical laws Lukas of the technology company 3M, which deals with the development and production of reflective materials.

The third advice when choosing a ribbon is quite practical, namely to try to get the widest reflective strip.

And if you have the option, choose a predicable dealer for your purchase. Idea is to get the tape directly with the BESIP logo. The top three also received two products from the Czech Post offer.

Mandatory pedestrian reflective elements: Better than nothing

In February, pedestrians are obliged to wear reflective vests. But nobody deliberately says what to look like, and there are shops full of shunts.

You would have to live abroad or on Mars so that you do not hear about new pedestrian obligations in the Czech Republic wearing reflective materials outside of the village for reduced visibility. In February, it will go out in a collection of laws and then start paying in 15 days.

In the autumn, the be sip campaign began, this year being sold to half a million reflective tapes, 100,000 bags for seniors and tens of thousands of shining laces for young people. The numbers of victims are really dull since 72 pedestrians died in the dark last year. This is what good foreign experience speaks of, where such a duty has been paid for years, and the number of deaths has dropped very fast. Will this happen to us?

A safety vest with built-in LED lighting

“I thought it would be even more convenient to wear the LED light on my clothes. Then I would have enough light everywhere, “says Dickens. At the kitchen table, he further developed his idea of a safety vest with built-in LED lighting.

The project gained momentum after Sickens spoke about it on a birthday with a firefighter present. “He said that they had been looking for something like that for years. Reflective vests are only visible when light shines on them. ”

Sickens received business and financial support from his father-in-law and his business partner. The first fifty luminous reflective safety vests were for the Rotterdam Fire Brigade. Without any marketing campaign, new applications came in from, among other things, shipping and road construction.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur is aware that his idea is actually very simple. “But it was not there yet and there is a lot of demand for it. Just like the paper clip. “He now has a patent and patent on the light vest.

The vest has a rechargeable battery that is fully within two hours and the LED light burns for 100 hours. Despite all electronics, it weighs only three hundred grams. According to Sickens, the vests, which are made in factories in Tilburg and Niemen, cannot be destroyed. “LED lighting lasts sixty thousand hours and we give a two-year warranty.”

The company has 69 different versions in the range, which can be washed out thanks to a special coating on the electronics. “The color of the vest, reflective tapes and the placement and color of the light differ,” says the young entrepreneur. “For staff who have to crawl through sewer pipes, there are vests with shoulder lighting so they always have enough visibility. Vests for crane operators have red lighting so that they can be clearly seen from the ground. ”

The vest meets almost all known safety labels. Only for the petrochemical industry. Strict requirements apply in that sector. For example, the vest must be explosion-proof. Sickens expects to have this quality mark in early 2018.

Wear reflections

Although the autumn has just begun, the aura has not been conducive to walking for a long time. Rain and falling faster and faster is a recipe for deducting a pedestrian every autumn and fall season.

Each of us is obliged to have reflective materials outside the built-up area, but it is also worth thinking about in the city. – There are places where pedestrians often just cannot be seen. A perfect example is Kosciuszko Street. There are lanterns there, but there are also many trees that cover both light and pedestrians. If someone stands at the pedestrian crossing, it’s hard to notice him from the car, and when it rains, it becomes invisible. You have to have your eyes to the wheel – says Lessen.

From the beginning of September, policemen have been appealing to pedestrians with caution wearing reflective vests. In the vicinity, there was a fatal deduction of a pedestrian. He passed through the A4 motorway. Without reflective elements, the clothing was completely invisible to the drivers. – Pedestrians as so-called unprotected road users in the face of speeding vehicles are defenseless. An accident with them involves extremely serious consequences – says Mariel Kowalski, KPP spokesperson.

It also reminds about pedestrian duties on the road: – You should wear reflections, especially at dusk, when the visibility is worse, and the dark colors of the clothes cause that the pedestrian is noticed by the driver until the last moment. Pedestrian equipped with reflective tapes for the driver is visible from a much greater distance, which allows for an earlier reaction – he adds. It’s a good idea to set up a reflex and take care of your safety.

Wear reflective vests in private vehicles

Security measure seeks to reduce the risk of collisions due to lack of visibility. Fines would reach $ 22 thousand.

Since January 1, 2016, the wearing of high visibility vests will be mandatory inside private vehicles. The purpose of the measure is to reduce the risk of being run over by drivers who, due to an emergency, must get out of their car.

The Undersecretary of Transportation, Christian Bowen, explained to T13 that a person without an accessory of these characteristics is visible at twenty meters, with the vest on, it is possible to see it at 150 meters.

– Christian Bowen April 28, 2015

On the characteristics that the safety vest should have, Bowen indicated that the color does not matter and “the important thing is that it is fluorescent and that it also has reflective tape“.

“It’s the cheapest life insurance I know,” he added.

Fines for not carrying the item will be around $ 22 thousand and the undersecretary explained that it is important that this is transported inside the car cabin to avoid the risk of going to look for it in the luggage rack.
