Time change influences uptick in pedestrian crashes

Our clocks will roll back an hour on Sunday, marking the end of daylight savings. But it’s not only a time to check your smoke alarms and fix the clock in your car. ODOT says it marks the deadliest time of the year for pedestrian crashes in the Buckeye state.

It says 34-percent of deadly pedestrian crashes happen in October, November, and December. “We see an increase, a large increase actually in pedestrian deaths due in part to the time change. It’s going to be getting dark earlier, people are walking home from work, kids walking home from school and it’s going to be a little darker when they do those things than when it is the rest of the year, “said Matt Bruning, Press Secretary for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

It recommends you take extra precautions this time of year to, “see and be seen.”

If you’re outside as it gets dark, wear reflective clothing with reflective tape, pay attention to crosswalks and signals, and walk against traffic- not with it.

Our clocks will roll back an hour on Sunday, marking the end of daylight savings. But it’s not only a time to check your smoke alarms and fix the clock in your car. ODOT says it marks the deadliest time of the year for pedestrian crashes in the Buckeye state.

For drivers, ODOT recommends you check your headlights, clean your windshields and slow down during times of poor weather, reduced visibility and in high-traffic areas like school zones.

It also recommends both drivers and pedestrians limit their distractions, like using a cell phone.

“When you look back to 2009, we’ve had more than 11-hundred pedestrians killed in the state of Ohio. About 70-percent of those pedestrian deaths happen at dawn, dusk or in the overnight hours when it’s darker outside,” said Bruning.

With the clocks changing in just days, we asked Central Ohioans how they’re preparing to stay safe on their commutes home from work.

“I will wear lighter clothes and make sure I have a flashlight on me at all times,” said Columbus resident, Georgette Haltom.

A message her friend, Kelly Matheny reiterated. “Wearing a coat that has reflective material.”

Gahanna resident Eric Hopkins says he’s not too worried about it being dark on his walk to the bus stop after work. “Just gotta be vigilant, obey the signals.”

So far this year, ODOT says at least 94 pedestrians and 23 bicyclists have been killed.

Police action “Safe weekend – May weekend”

There is a long, May weekend on the roads of the Silesian Voivodship. At this time, we have to expect more intensive checks from the police, which takes care of the safety of the travelers. On the roads of the whole region, more radars and police controls appeared than in May. “During this year’s long May weekend, as in previous years, an increased number of Silesian policemen, main policemen from traffic, watches over the safety of people going to rest,” police informed.

There is a long weekend on the roads of the Silesian Voivodeship. Therefore, more police officers take care of the safety of travelers from May 1 to 5.

“Along May weekend is a time of trips and meetings for many Poles. During this period, an increased number of Silesian policemen watches over the security of travelers,” informs the Silesian police.

On the roads of our province, there will be more policemen from traffic. Intensified speed checks will, therefore, be carried out.

“Police activities “Safe weekend-May weekend” have already begun on April 26, but the largest vehicle traffic can be expected from 30 April at May 6 to May 5 22. During the actions, the police officers check if the drivers are moving according to the regulations,” we learn from the officers.

In May, police on roads will surely control the speed and sobriety of drivers, as well as their adherence to other traffic regulations. During the long weekend, we can expect on the streets not only marked police cars, but also police officers operating in unmarked cars who will catch drivers who do not comply with traffic regulations.

Police appeals to drivers:

“Let us drive carefully, observing the rules, at a speed adapted to the conditions on the road, let us remember that road safety depends primarily on the drivers themselves – from their prudence, the ability to anticipate threats and respect for other drivers.

Drivers of two-wheelers, in addition to deriving joy from fast driving, should, first of all, remember about safety – their own and other road users. We appeal for safe driving. The motorcycle does not have airbags and seat belts, and the helmet and safety vest will only to a certain extent prevent injuries. That is why it is so important that motorcyclists are guided by reason while driving, and not a desire to experience an adventure at any price – because the price can be very high. “

Communists in yellow vests will go to protest against Wenceslas

Hundreds of Communists in reflective vests will protest against housing, water, electricity or gas. The event will take place on Wenceslas Square in Prague at the end of January. Communists have been inspired by protests in France. This is informed by the Lidovky.cz portal.

The demonstration, to be held on Saturday, 26 January, is organized by the Communist Party of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic together with the Union of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the Communist Youth Union and the Alliance of Labor and Solidarity and the Women’s Left Club.

“No one else will do it for us. We have enough to raise the cost of living! ”

In addition to high rents in Prague and rising mortgages, they also do not like rising energy prices.

“Rising rents have been boosted since the beginning of the year with the rise in commodities that have a significant impact on the housing such as gas, electricity, heat and, to a certain extent, water and sewage,” said MKS secretary of the Prague Communist Party Viktor Puzzler

The organizers also invite participants to take reflective tapes. They became famous thanks to the massive protests against rising fuel prices and housing in France at the end of last year.

“We do not pretend there is some inspiration,” admits the secretary of the Prague Communists.

Insert the reflective vest into the storage compartment

Reflective vest – in Poland, passenger car drivers do not have to have it, but they should. It costs only PLN 7-10 and can save a life. In most European countries, reflective vests are mandatory equipment for cars and trucks (in some also motorcycles).

From 1 July, the obligation to have a vest was introduced in Germany. Its lack means a mandate of 15 Euros. The obligation applies only to drivers of cars registered in Germany, but for the sake of their own safety, it is also worth respecting them with us. In countries where vests are compulsory, they must be worn whenever the driver and passengers have to leave the vehicle, for example as a result of a breakdown or accident, on a highway or other road – except of course parking lots.

Reflective vests are already valid in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic (applies to foreigners), Croatia, Finland (you can have reflective stripes), France, Spain, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and in Italy. The regulations are not uniform – in one country, you only need one vest in the car and in others, and all passengers must have it. In some countries, this obligation also applies to motorcyclists and cyclists, if they are traveling on roads after dusk.

We advise you not to look for loopholes and apply the maximum variant – take as many retro-reflective vests as possible for the number of passengers traveling. The vest costs from 7 to 10 zlotys. You can buy it at every gas station, in supermarkets, on the internet. Let us just remember to meet the norm – reflective vests are allowed in 3 colors: yellow, orange or red-orange. It must also have 2 reflective stripes at the front and back.

When buying vests, do not forget about children, in the event of a car breakdown or an accident, they will be particularly vulnerable. Reflective vests must be carried in the cabin of the car, and not – as most drivers do – in the trunk. The idea is to be able to put on a high visibility vest before leaving the car. We would also like to remind you: in the event of a breakdown or accident, a warning triangle should be put in front of the car; passengers should get out of the car not on the road, only on the right side, on the roadside. It is not allowed to stay on the road without having to go down to the side or the barrier as soon as possible.
